7pm-8:30pm - it's our movie night « The Manzanar Fishing Club » with a discussion to follow.
Locked away in the California desert, more than 10,000 Americans of Japanese descent faced an uncertain future at the World War II internment camp at Manzanar. Armed Military Police, guard towers and barbed wire sent the clear message that they were prisoners in their own country.
The Manzanar Fishing Club in the uplifting tale of those who sought and found moments of freedom by escaping the Camp to fish the surrounding waters of the famed "Eastern Sierra". And in the process, they gave new meaning to the old phrase "Gone Fishing".
The movie can be seen as complementary to the novel, "Hotel On the Corner of Bitter and Sweet", based on a true story that we read in our Book Group. It tells the story of a young Chinese school boy in Seattle, Washington, who finds a soul mate in the person of a young Japanese girl which helps him endure anti-Asian discrimination in his school.
